About the Town of Ramapo |
The name "Ramapo" is apparently a Indian (Algonquin) word that means 'round pond' or 'sweet water,' which indicates the presence of fresh water in the area. Ramapo apparently developed on the early stage coach route between New York City and Albany, which passed through the Ramapo pass several years ago. One of the Town Justices is: Hon. David Fried, Town Justice. Most tickets in this court are issued by the Town of Ramapo Police Department which is very very aggressive in issuing tickets. There are 3-4 days of traffic court, and on any given day, there could be over 100 traffic tickets. This is a very busy court. Plea bargaining is done through the Ramapo Town Attorney. The deals are not always so generous, so beware. For example, as of this writing, there are no plea bargains offered for child seatbelt tickets. Pursuant to New York Law, the Ramapo Justice Court has jurisdiction over traffic violations, criminal misdemeanors & violations, arraignments and prelim hearings for felonies, as well as small claims cases to $3,000 in either justice court or small claims actions.
